Casino giant Genting, which owns the land formerly housing the Miami Herald, (and which is currently building a new megaresort on the Las Vegas Strip), is proposing to build a monorail across Biscayne Bay.

The casino company with plans for a Miami resort has partnered with a Chinese company to pursue a tax-funded contract to build a monorail system between downtown and Miami Beach.

A May 17 letter from the office of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez lists Genting and Chinese company BYD as proposers behind the confidential “Miami Beach Monorail Unsolicited Proposal.”

Genting has the money but they want tax payer funding.

Long road ahead with more details needed, financial impacts, NIMBY’s, US / China relations, impacts on housing costs, government service (FD, PD, EMT), pay enough for the staff to be able to live/commute to the casino etc.

It will be interesting to see how long a definitive deal is done.

Goodness, the only and highest priority transit project we should be doing is a rail link from Miami to MB. Genting? Hell, the gov should have constructed it years ago. I can just imagine how much traffic would be eased to/from there.

Not to mention how much more appealing the 2 areas would be. Stay in a downtown, bay-front hotel or you can stay in ocean front hotels or art-deco style hotels in South Beach. No need for a car or paying for ubers to get back n forth.

Another proposal of transit linking downtown to SoBe... been hearing this for decades and still nothing. Hell will probably freeze over before Miami gets transit linking these two areas ;p

Exactly.

Talk is cheap (actually it's expensive, see below).

Let them put their money where their mouth is.

I'll believe when I see it.

What is certain is that county and mayors' offices will pay another several hundred million to "consultants" to talk more about it.

Good Luck!

With rising sea levels, why not build below ground/ in the water?? ...a couple examples of this include BART between SF and Oakland and LIRR between Queens and Penn Station. Build the entrance/exit platforms/stations several feet higher on land, while the rails and trains are “protected” underground.
