South Beach if you can afford it, otherwise Miami Beach.

Lincoln Road has many restaurants and shops, which connects to the ocean.

You should stay at Collins Ave.

Honestly, both are nice places. I like Downtown a lot, so I'd suggest Downtown, but if you plan on just visiting places in South Beach, South Beach seems the more logical choice. Downtown and Brickell have a lot of really nice hotels you can look into. Some more pricier than others, but there are a lot of bargains you can find in the area.

Stay in South Beach about 17th Street to about 5th Street is where most of everything is. So try to stay close by so you can walk to things. I wouldn't waste your time in downtown Miami there isn't anything there really.

South Beach. I recommend the Courtyard by Marriott. I think it is at 3rd and Collins. The area is two or three blocks south of the partying, one of the more newly constructed hotels in South Beach, and substantially less expensive than the Lowes (the only other newer hotel I can think of at the moment on the beach). This part of South Beach is called South Point or SoFi (South of Fifth).

Do NOT rent a car at the airport. This will be a HUGE burden. There is nowhere to park for non-residents that is inexpensive AND you can walk everywhere.

Downtown has interesting things but you will be bored with it in a few hours.
