Ok, I'm not from Florida, and I've only been to JAX, so this may come as a dumb question for locals. Why is the cost of living in Homestead so cheap (compared to MIA, FTlauderdale etc).

Thanks

because the whole place was flattened in 92 by hurricane andrew and they had to rebuild from scratch. its also very far from many jobs so unless youre used to los angeles commutes you'll have to drive far and the drive is worse than LA because of the psycho drivers.
in general people here hold more value in city than being close to nature so living in homestead is considered "in the boonies" and undesirable since there arent alot of malls and shops around unlike miami beach and aventura.

The reason is because Homestead is at least 20 miles south of Downtown Miami. There are no jobs down there. The neighbourhoods are not very good either, lots of crime. It would take you at least one hour, to get to work. Not recommended unless you find a job in Kendall.

The main reason Homestead is cheaper, is because it is so far from Miami. If you have a job in downtown Miami and live in Homestead, the commute is a hour to an hour-and-a-half in rush hour.

I live in Homestead and have done so since 1978. Such stories some of you tell!! I believe it is cheaper because of the distance to downtown Miami, but not everyone works in downtown Miami. Homestead is about 20 miles from Key Largo (the beginning of the Florida Keys) and the same distance from Everglades National Park. For nature lovers, fishermen, people who love the countryside, it is a great place to live. The nuclear power plant (Turkey Point) is doing just fine. The farming area has many wholesale nurseries, avocado groves, mango groves, orchid nurseries, some the best u-pick spots around and we are far far away from the craziness of South Beach and Miami.

Hey plantlover, I'm looking for an avocado tree. Do you have any suggestions on where to go?

Have you tried Pine Island Nursery? I think they are in the phone book. They are located in the Redland area.
