I'm not sure about the limits of Palmetto Bay, I know the area better by street #'s but I believe the public schools are not that great until you get to High School, 10th grade(Palmetto HS) but I guess there's always private school.

Palmetto HS starts in 9th grade. Palmetto Bay starts at 136 Street down to Eureka I think. Its got larger lots, cheaper than Pinecrest to the North. Still close to plenty of shopping, restaurants, etc. If you are considering this area stay as far north as you can, just to be closer to things. The southern end of this Village is closer to some rougher parts lets just say, so stay as far east as you can if you are looking at the southern end. Otherwise the northern end close to 136 is very nice. You will notice the further south you go the homes start to be sitting on top of hills, its because this area and parts of Cutler Bay are low lieing and so the homes had to be built up for storm surge purposes.

Yes I stand corrected. It wasn't like that before. Then again the school was 70% white non-hispanic so I'm sure a lot of things have changed since then.

Err, Coral Reef Elementary and Southwood Middle (which has a magnet program) are considered pretty good schools as far as I can recall (don't know about Perrine Elementary). And Palmetto High is probably the best public high school in the county of those without magnet programs.

Palmetto Bay is a great neighborhood (yes, I am biased, I grew up there). I would echo one of the earlier posters who said to avoid the southwest corner, very generally speaking--basically the area that has US1 to the west, 168th to the north, 184th to the south, and 87th to the east. It's not a "bad" area by most stretches of the imagination...part of it near US1 is just a bit sketchy looking.

I'd beg to differ (and I'm 22, btw). Though they do bring in a number of kids from across the highway--Coral Reef has Richmond Heights zoned to it, and Southwood had West Perrine zoned to it. There were also a number of kids from West Kendall who went to Southwood for the magnet programs. So yes, the racial demographics are probably more diverse than Palmetto Bay proper. That primarily-black West Perrine contingent was also zoned to Palmetto High, but they ended up making up a less of the demographic when you combined with Palmetto Middle's demographics.
