I am plannning to stay at this hotel over Christmas with a 1 year old. I can't find too many up close photos of the beach in front of this hotel. Is it a relatively swimmable beach? I have been at the Westin in Hollywood, FL and they had a really nice beach good for swimming. I just want to be able to put my little one in the water as long as there are no huge waves crashing all the time.

All the east facing beaches are pretty calm most of the time. Very small waves and usually clear water. Storms will change this though and even storms way out at sea can send waves into the coast.

It depends on the weather. Usually at that time of year it should be fine.

The beach is very nice, quite swimmable in my view. It is not as shallow and firm as the beach near south pointe park, the water gets knee deep pretty quickly as you wade in. Sometimes the wave action is a bit rough on windy days as others have posted. Just for you, I posted a picture of the beach behind Loews on my flickr page:
