All,

I am in the Army and I'm going to be moving down to Miami after I return from the Iraq deployment I am currently on. I am starting to look at places to live and I'm starting my search by trying to locate safe areas for my wife and I to live. Can you all help me out? The farthest south I have ever been in Florida was Tampa, and I was only there for a few days. Any information you can provide would be awesome! Thanks!

PS. I'm looking for something like a top 5-10 safe neighborhoods in vicinity of West 91st street. Thanks!

Agreed, a NW or SW and a cross street would narrow that list down.

I grew up in Kendall in the SW and most areas in Kendall are very safe. So are Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, and South Miami (all SW). Doral and Miami Lakes are nice and safe, and probably your best bet in the NW.

The advice I do have for you is to visit before you lock into a buy or lease. Go during the day, during the night (see if you feel safe strolling around the streets), and if possible when it's raining heavily (to make sure the parking lot doesn't flood; Doral seems to have some problems with this, but it can happen anywhere). Do some people-watching and see who hangs around.

And get ready for the Spanish if you're not used to it already :0)

Hope this helps! And thanks for your service!

All,

Sorry for the vagueness of my last post, I was referring to NW 91st street, the area just south of the Doral Resort and Country Club on mapquest/google maps. Thanks again!

I'm guessing you are working at SOUTHCOM? If you are looking at a nice area for yourself and your wife, I would check out West Miramar, Pembroke Pines, or Weston (more $$ though).

The good thing about Doral is that it's very close to the Florida Turnpike. I know people who work off-hours and live in Coral Springs and Parkland and actually commute to Doral. Not sure if I can deal with that commute, but it can be done.

HowGoesIt,

You are correct, that's where I'm going. How is the Florida Turnpike? Do you think Hollywood or West Hollywood are too far away to commute using the pike during peak hours? Thanks for all of the info!

Stay away from west miramar. It's getting bad unless you live WEST of 184 ave...which only very wealthy people can do...plus the traffic to get anywhere in the morning is a nightmare. I would stick with Weston or even West Davie which is next door.

Me too, Cooper City is also a better option, but whats so bad with this area? I have spent a lot of time in these areas, I believe that there is some property crime but the worst I have seen is some packs of bored, mischievous looking teenagers hanging around apartment complexes, and it doesn't even approach Coral Springs levels of that. The areas west of 184th are also actually a good deal IMO when compared to some similar surrounding areas.

Another option is just living in Doral...it's congested, but not unsafe and it's always better to not have a long commute. If you are not bothered by a heavily Hispanic population, the area would be fine, and at least it's a convenient location to things to do on the weekend.
