Spend many a week end in the UPPER looking for the right place to fit our wants. After several months and realitor calls we found it on Big Bay De Noc. 37 acres with a half mile of frontage surounded by state and federal land except for one tiney bit on one corner.
We have owned it for nearly 20 years now but found we were unable to retire there for now due to elder parents we needed to be close to. Well My mom passed in Feburay 2010 so all that is left is Kares mom now.

The point is that even though we are not in the UPPER I can not think of a better place to live than where we are now. 10 tiny acres 7 wooded surrounded by farm fields and a horse farm. We have these to view out our living room window just about daily.

Those are awesome! I was watching some deer in the field next to our house last week and a cat walked right up to a mom and her 2 fawns, then just walked into the weeds. The two little ones were very intrigued and followed it into the weeds....the one of the cat you took is awesome! Well, they are all awesome.
I WILL retire to the U.P someday....keep the dream alive!

The U.P. is not for everyone, never was. One of the reasons we have so few people....and a lot of land/lakefrontage. There are thousands of acres , yet to be discovered/developed. Much of our wilds are National Forests , or private held in trust.... Considering the distance from more populated places , Upper Michigan will always be special, I guess the main reason some of us chose to live here.
We are really only 330 miles north of Chicago , here in the Marquette/western U.P.( best part). A lot of Illinois folks come here for that reason, and with our International Airport, its only 45 min. to Chicago.
I waited 35 years to make the move north, to cross this corner of the world off my bucket list. Many days , I wish I had not waited so long, yet , when its right , when you have all your affairs in order, when you are ready. Its the old adadage , if it was ment to be....

It really is sort of a dilemma. I'd rather have one place to call home that has everything (shoreline would be wonderful) but not sure about a UP winter year after year especially since I'm older. If you can find a lot of what you love where you are - consider yourself lucky good to go!
Did you ever have any bear or other neat wildlife on your UP property?

Yes , one of my workers caught 3 cubs and a momma Black bear last week on his deer cam , behind my house feeding on the apples.! . deer are everywhere , Pine martins, and a Big Fisher in my woods that screams like a person. There are wolves, mountain lions , and moose , but yet to see them. The Porkies are a pain , as my dog found out last month, vet removed 29 quill's ! Eagles, soar over my roof , along with huge Turkey Buzzards. We have Coyotes also , but closer to town as they raid the dumpsters.

Wow.....

It looks like we're moving forward with our home. It's in Kingsley, it's 25 acres, assuming we get approved for financing, it should be ours.

It was farm land, the soil is terribly depleted compared to others, but I figure with my horsies, they'll fix that right up.

All I can think about is someday, I'll replant it bit by bit, year by year, and I'm told it will have lots of wildlife....

I wanna cry. This can all be mine? Those are some awesome views, Al, my lifelong dream.

The U.P. isn't going anywhere. You never know what opportunities life may bring, just maybe not with the timing you expected....

Thanks for the pictures. Just what I needed when I'm feeling bone-weary with another inning to go!

For 10 acres... you've got a great little slice of heaven.
