My husband and I are looking to take our first trip to Northern Michigan, not the UP just the areas around Traverse City to Mackinaw City. We'd like to be directly on the beaches of Lake Michigan since we've never seen it before but I get eaten alive by mosquitoes, even when no one else gets a bite, and I heard that black flies can be a major problem. Does anyone have advice, I'd love to lay on a beach somewhere but I don't want to be covered in bugs? I'd love to find a nice bug free beach on a bay somewhere, is that possible or are the stories Ive heard over exaggerated? Perhaps we should stay in a cute town instead? Also any advice on great things to do with dogs in that area, our dachshunds will be with us?
Thanks!

Usually Lake Michigan beaches don't have problems with bugs. Bugs are where the bushes, forests, swamps and undergrowth are. If there is no wind, maybe the beaches could have some bugs.

I think anywhere in Michigan in June is just not going to be bug-free. I've done work in the dunes and gotten eaten alive.

If you want to avoid bugs, come in February.

Really depends on several factors, mainly weather and precip. I have been in the deep woods in that region in June and July and never had to use repellent or have been bothered by insects, but it was dry for weeks. The beaches can see biting flies, but not mosquitoes so much - again depends on weather and winds much of the time. The past two years in the Traverse area I was genuinely surprised at the lack of biting insects. I wouldn't let the horror stories detract you from a great vacation.

"Bug-free"? Never happen. Slather yourself with Deep Woods Off and you'll be fine.
