I got a ticket for speeding. The city would not take payment plans and I have been unemployed for over a year. I went in to pay the ticket and they told me they would not accept checks anymore as my DL was suspended because the ticket was being paid so late. I told them I would be back with the cash and then STUPIDLY got in my car and went to drive to the bank. A police officer arrested me 1 block away and I had to have someone come and pay bond to get me out..car impounded etc. I paid for the ticket at the same time so license is no longer suspended. I have arraignment on June 2nd. I am terrified. I had no idea this could result in jail time and that I need a lawyer?? I have never had any other issues with the law in 48 years. What can I expect??/ State of Michigan

Wow.... that ticket got more and more expensive. Jail time for this? Those are some strict judges.

I didn't realise a single unpaid speeding ticket would get someone a suspended license here...I would have assumed a bench warrant. Yikes.

I agree this seems really harsh. If your record is otherwise good, I cannot imagine this being cause for jail...get a lawyer, if you can afford one. I think some law schools have progams where students help people pro bono - won't get you representation in court, but might be a good place to start?

So you didnt pay your Speeding ticket for over a Year, Iam sure they told you if its not paid within a Time frame your being Suspended, if not I am sure its on the back fo your ticket. Then they tell your suspended, but you still drive....then you get pulled over again? Speeding ?

Cmon now there is more to this then what your telling.
This dont make any Sense...

Upaid moving violations will get your license suspended. Get a lawyer (spend big for a really good one) and you MIGHT weasel your way out and get to keep your license. Without a lawyer you will pay the fine (probably as much as a lawyer cost) but probably will have a restricted license...You might also have to pay additional DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY fees when renewing your license plates...

Did they read you your rights when you were arrested ?

'' You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.

That would have been an ideal time to get a court appointed lawyer

No...I did not pay the ticket over 2 months...not a year. I was not pulled over for speeding. I had gone to the court to pay the ticket and at that time was informed I needed cash not a check. Like I said it was stupid of me to then get in my car to go to the bank. That is when they pulled me over....at the end of the parking lot. For driving with a suspended license. Look..I take full responsibility for this. I was just trying to get some advice.

No....they never read me my rights. Just handcuffed me and took me to jail....I them paid bail and was released and now I have the arraingment.

Did you drive yourself to court? Then you drove there on a suspended license BEFORE gettin the ticket leaving the bank...
