I have looked at the taxes, cost of living, services, etc. and I think it is a winner! Crime is much lower than here in SE Kansas, and I learned a long time ago after moving around and pursuing higher education that the basic education Michigan had given me was probably among the best in the nation. I had joined the military and always planned to come home but just didn't make it yet. This is MY year, finally!
Welcome home they still haven't fixed the railroad tracks in Cassopolis by (fruitloop) energy. But I hate to say it after 40 years watching this state go down I am on my way out I've had enough the pay is good but they take more than I make overall, and it just isnt worth it. It will always be home to me and I will come back someday I am sure.

I moved here from Maine in 2011. What people moving here really need are jobs. :-(

My new wife and I are looking to move to Chicago-land at some point in the near future.

Greetings,

I'm born and raised in Southern California and have considered moving near Howell, Brighton or surrounding areas.

I have friends and acquaintances in Port Huron and Howell. Both times I've visited Michigan have been extensively in the South East parts. Both visits were in the summertime of 2010 and 2011. I put 1000 miles on my rental car in one week traveling between Howell and Port Huron last year.

I realize there are many other beautiful parts of Michigan. Especially places like Traverse City, West Haven and others.

As much as I fell in love with Michigan. I must admit being a little apprehensive about the winters ( being from Southern California ).
I will also admit being concerned about the overall economy in Michigan as well.

With the above said, I've traveled to many different states and haven't found any that grabbed me quite like Michigan.

The economy in Michigan is actually picking up quite nicely, and if your gonna move to Michigan...move to where they get more snow so you can actually enjoy it!! If you get snow...you wont be bored!

Spent 20 years in Maine... you couldn't drag me back to that under-paid, no job, over-priced State for any amount of money.

Unfortunately we are still getting fatter, less educated and reading proficient, more suicidal, losing 25 -34 yr olds (though not as bad), and have more % uninsured.

We do drink more however!

I remember this interactive map a while back. Looks like they also did another one that is more up to date.

You'll be getting 4 more Californians in July if all goes well. I cannot wait! What does anyone know about Stockbridge, Pinckney, Chelsea, or Dexter? I love the rural life, and would be happy to never set foot in a mall again, but my 13 year old would beg to differ. What do kids do for fun in these areas? They seem like farming communities, which makes 3/4 of our family happy, but I don't want to torture my stepdaughter, the socal valley girl. (personally, we think rural life will do her some good, but I'd hate to make her go cold turkey)
