After five months of November, we are ready for any change in the weather. While it was nice to have some nice days in the winter, I woudl prefer snow to just cold and bleak.

Now it looks like the endless November is finally going to end. 60 tomorrow!. I hope it stays that way, or even goes into a real winter for a few months. November is my least favorite month (althought he occaisional 50 degree day is pretty neat).

I live between Flint and Lansing where we have had no winter either. We were up in Traverse City...then to the U.P last weekend and I forgot how awesome winter really is with lots of snow! Before we left I had Spring fever pretty badly, but after that, I just wanted to stay in the cold and snow and forget about Spring.

This was one of our mildest, most snow-free winters in years. A few cold, snowy weekends for winter-play, but that was about it. After a string of very snowy winters, sadly we were due for a stinker. And this was one, nationwide stinker of a winter.

A snapshot of the last two winters where I live in southeast Michigan

2011-12: 25.4" of snowfall, 20 days with 1"+ snowcover (most days under 3"), well above avg temps
2010-11: 69.4" of snowfall, 81 days with 1"+ snowcover (most days over 6"), well below avg temps

I was up in Grayling this weekend. GORGEOUS. Remember though, they had next to no winter either (for them) until this past week. Hell, what was amazing in Grayling was nearly 30" deep, and DENSE. The snow never really got deeper than a foot in Grayling last winter, while we in Southeast Michigan were approaching a foot-and-a-half of snowpack in Feb! This winter, our peak snowdepth was 5", and theres was 30"!

We have been completely spoiled this winter and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I do feel bad for the owners of ski hills though. They really suffered this winter.

A few weeks ago I had a CVS cashier who complained about our winter weather and said she wanted spring weather to come. I wanted to say "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!"

And it was NOT 2-3 feet of powder. It was like quicksand, it was so dense! Will take a while to melt! I know any bit of snow there is scenic, but its all relative. Snow is snow. I have taken some VERY scenic snow shots around my own area the past several winters. We have parks, woods, and lakes in SE corner of the state too, and quite honestly, a snow-lover, as ridiculous as it sounds, would have had better times in the southern part of the state than the northern part the previous 2 winters. The DIFFERENCE is that up there scenery is EVERYWHERE. Driving down the freeway or whatever, snow plastered forests of conifers everywhere was just beyond gorgeous. You dont have to go to the park or whatever for a super scenic shot :-)

True! I took some photos in Grayling on Sunday, and I couldn't have screwed them up if I wanted to. Everything was postcard-worthy, everywhere I looked.

The numbers are in.....and all very impressive for SE Michigan

For Detroit, it was the 6th warmest winter on record
Flint saw their 5th warmest winter on record
Saginaw saw their 4th warmest winter on record

Despite the warmth, not one of the 3 cities can even place in their top 20 least snowy winters list, as Detroit has seen 25.9" of snow (their 20th least snowy winter was 25.1"), Flint has seen 33.1" (their 20th least snowy winter is 31.3") and Saginaw has seen 43.8" (their 20th least snowy winter is 27.5").

So while there have been only a handful of winters warmer than this one, there have been many that were even less snowy.

winter just started a few weeks ago in the northern half of the state. ( and they still have much much less than normal in most areas) Most of the year they have had the same pathetic winter the rest of us have had. At least we had a storm or two here, ive heard that in the southeast corner of the state some have not seen the grass covered.
