I didn't know this. This might explain the semi-literate doppleganger on here who continually bashes MI, has no ties to the state like a home, yet somehow can't leave.

That would be my guess. A leach on the State they are knocking, and a parasite on the forum.

I will be moving out of state shortly-still haven't sold my condo--is there some kind of penalty for not living in the condo even though I'm paying for it and living out of state?

I wouldn't think so. It would be the same as an extended vacation... a VERY extended vacation. Check with the Condo people for sure so there are no nasty surprises though.

Is there a rental market there? Can you rent the home - reduce the monthly cash flow - and move down here where jobs and housing are in good shape? In NC we have flowers blooming and birds singin' - come on down!

Good question. We have thought about that, but we are afraid to take the risk. Our situation is a bit different. My husband's job is stable, we can afford our very modest home, it's just that I want to move so bad, but we can't sell it for how much we owe...the value went down $30,000!!! We are stuck, & I am pretty depressed. I hate it here.

I'm in the same boat, I can afford it but I want out since I don't see me making any money off of it. Once summer comes it will be much more bearable since I spent all my free time in the yard.

We can't afford our house much longer. We are not currently behind, because we caught up everything with our tax return, but will eventually get to that point again. We aren't getting anywhere with selling our house. It has been on the market with different realtors the past 2 years and not one bite. We owe as much or less as the house is worth. We owe about $85,000, and it appraised at $98,000 when we put it in. It is a manufactured home, and appraisal was done in 2001. I doubt it is worth that now though, with things the way they are. This is probably why no bites on the house, and nothing really "special" about it really. We desperately want to move back to Missouri (Michigan now), and be done with this, but feel we are trapped in our house. I was considering a "Deed in Lieu of Foreclosure", or simply walking away, but not sure what to do. We have tried to do things the "right" way with selling, but in the meantime, my wife's father has had a heart attack, her brother and sister have had children, and life is passing us by back in Missouri. What should we do?

I don't want to make money off my home, just to break even so we can move from this hell hole. I hate winter, hate how long it is, hate how we can drive four hours in this state, but it is all the same....no ocean, no mountains....no foothills...I just hate it here.

I have been wanting to move for four years, but....haven't had that blessing yet.

One of the only good things about this state is that the homeschooling laws are awesome (even though I don't home school right now), we have a philosophical exception to vaccines, & we have lots of choices when searching for home birth midwives. Sigh. Why can't Michigan be in the south?
