My family is relocating for a job in Battle Creek and we need to find a home to buy. Any thoughts on Hickory Corners? The schools look great, but from google maps it looks like shopping/activities will be at least 30 minutes away. Is that true? My husband wants 4 to 50 acres and I will be living on an acreage for the first time. I don't want to be to far away from things because I am already a little worried about not having street lights or neighbors.

I pass through occasionally. The brown roof on the corner is a party store & small grocery - that's pretty much it. It is definitely rural - "peaceful" is a word for it.
The church looks quite prosperous, but I don't know what denomination it is - I would check that.

This is the south end of Gull Lake with its marina and restaurant. M-89 goes to Battle Creek or you can go southwest to Kalamazoo. The white gray-roofed bldg is a nightclub.

West on M-89, Richland has gas, groceries, banks, and more amenities. It seems to be the local hub of activities. I would prefer an area like this, but I have no info on acreage there.

Hickory Corners is a nice area. The actual village of Hickory Corners is very tired looking and tiny, but the surrounding countryside is very nice. It is only 15-20 minutes from Richland and lots of commercial/retail on M-43 as you head into the northeast side of Kalamazoo. There's not a ton of shopping on that stretch, but there is a Meijer and Walmart, etc. I would definitely live in the Hickory Corners area on some acreage. But not in the village itself.
