Hi - My wife and I are planning a trip to the UP next month (for 3 or 4 nights), and were looking for recommendations for place to stay around the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore. Also, looking for things to do and what all we should include in the trip. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

You really only have two options for towns to stay in near Pictured Rocks. Munising is on the western edge of the park, and Grand Marais is on the eastern edge. Munising is a much bigger town and is the starting point for most of the tourism in Pictured Rocks, including the boat tours, which dock in Munising. Almost all of the "official" tourism info for Pictured Rocks will direct you towards Munising. Grand Marais is more remote, much smaller, with fewer lodging options, but it really is a neat place if you are looking for a more rustic/remote experience. If you do happen to make it to Grand Marais, the Lake Superior Brewing Co. is worth a visit!

Someone else will have to help with specific lodging recommendations, but hopefully that helps you get started.

Thank you. Are there other things to do there apart from the boat tours? We were thinking we can spend 2 days there and then another day visiting Tahquamenon Falls.

TQ Falls would be doable for a full day trip. Autrain is west on 28 a bit, they have cabins on the inland lake there and kayaking on the Autrain river

The sunset tour for Pictured Rocks is fantastic. We stayed in Munising, too.

If you can get together with a few others maybe you can rent a small pontoon for half a day $175-$200. Thats what we did last time there with a bunch of family. Totally cool to pull up on miners beach have a picnic and swim you can pull right up to the cliffs and get xtreme close ups. Also went about 1/4 mile off shore and swam out in the deep lake. It was cool to be in charge of your own tour and operating the pontoon was a cinch

Hiking is great in the PRNL. There are many trails going through the woods all the way to the lake and you often won't see other people. Stop at the visitors center in Munising to get maps and other info about the area.

I have heard great things about Grand Island but haven't been there yet.

The Holiday Inn is the nicest hotel in Munising but lodging is pretty expensive in this area in summer. I stayed at the Sunset Motel on the Bay many years ago and is a nice small motel right on the bay. If you decide to stay in Grand Marais, avoid the North Shore Lodge. Run-down, dirty and overpriced. The only thing it has going for it is the nice location near the beach. Check out Trip Advisor for reviews of other lodging in the area.
