are there safe, affordable apartments (around 600-700) near this school? i probably wont have a car neither.

what's the weather like? entertainment? as a shy person, hard to meet people?

I don't have personal experience living around MSU but I've grown up driving through and hanging out in the area. I've seen quite a few reasonable apartments/houses near the area. It's a rather large rental area. Cata services the area so there's not much of an issue with not having a car, plus it's a pretty bike friendly area. The weather is different. It go from warm to cold in a matter of minutes and it does snow here. There's a lot of opportunities to meet people, even if your shy as it's a typical college town. I hope this helps.

The vet school is near the south end of campus. You can either rent just off Grand River and commute by bike or bus, or you can go to the outskirts of MSU entirely - Okemos, Haslett, Jolly / Dunkel Rd, east side of Lansing / Frandor, Mt Hope / Hagadorn. I found several rentals advertised for $700 or less on Craigslist just now, use the map feature to see the locations of each.

Weather is a northern climate. You won't seen much of the sun from Nov-April, and it will be hoovering in "cold" during these months. Usually 20's - 30's, but can get as cold as 0 or below for a week or 2 at a time come January. There is snow in the winter months. Summers and fall are fantastic weather, spring can be very rainy.

As for entertainment - this is a university town with more than 40,000 students. There are things to do.

H O W E V E R ... The MSU Vet school is among the toughest in the country. If you get in there, expect to not have time to entertain yourself. I am not joking. The vet school is serious business, you will not have a very prominent social life while attending. Most of the people I know that have gone through the school are either rodeo or horse people during their very limited free time.

You will be busy, busy, busy~this is a tough school and only the determined make it. That being said, it's a great area. Many of the local veterinarians hire Vet students to work at their practice, and some of them even provide room and board so that they animals are not alone at night. Allows the live-ins to check on surgery and high anxiety dogs while kenneled at the vet. You will be able to find housing for that price, although you might want to consider rooming with another vet student in a 2 BR place. You'll find that for $400 a month, 2 people can get a better than decent apartment in a safe, close location to the parts of campus that you will need to be accessible to. It's a bike and walking friendly town, and the CATA bus transit system is efficient and used by residents and students.
