Teachers are being squeezed. But the SpEd will be her saving grace. Spanish had been a very hot cert for years. SpEd will be easier to get a position. I would find a place to live and then your wife can probably find a position within 10-20 miles of that.

For living, I would look at western Livonia, Plymouth, Farmington / Farmington Hills and Northville. My wife and I love downtown Northville and it is generally crowded with younger couples and quite a few families.

If the drive is not a real concern, Brighton / South Lyon are worth considering as well. Teaching positions are available for SpEd and Spanish positions might be easier to find outside Wayne County?

I agree with everything this poster says regarding the cities. Northville is the top choice, but price usually narrows the options. Plymouth and Western Livonia are great too.

I think Plymouth is great. It has a nice downtown, and you are halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor. Royal Oak and Ferndale are nice, you just have to drive down 696 to the Southfield Freeway. Heck, you could probably rent a house instead of an apartment.
