What makes pizza so special here?

My wife and I grew up in Flint, and have lived in southern California for the last 38 years.
When we were dating, we went to John's on Davison Road often.
Although we went to the Davison location the past two times that we've visited the in-laws, 38 years later and the pizza is still great.

My other favorite is Ruggero's, for the Super Pizza.

I have tried many pizza restaurants here in soCal, and have come to the conclusion that they can't make a good pizza to save their lives. I'm not talking about the gourmet ("sissy") pizzas, but rather a duplicate of Ruggero's Super Pizza, ingredient for ingredient.

Along with White Castle and sometimes Haloburger, John's and Ruggero's are must-stop places when we visit Flint.

Haha! Yeah, nothing like avocado and cilantro on a pizza.

A few months ago the Flint Journal/mLive did a vote and contest for the best pizza in Genesee county; you can find it on the site.

I know the top three finalists were Luigi's in Flint, Roma's in Mt Morris and one I can't remember in Flushing. I think Luigis is very good, very authentic no BS pizza with great crust. Roma's IMHO is just too oily and topping-heavy...I don't live far from there so have tried it several times. But it does have its fans, obviously.

That said I like sissy pizza too.

My favorite pizza is actually Huckleberry Junction in Genesee. Yummy!!!

(And the two John's on Davison Rd. [Flint and Davison] are not affiliated.)

Gina's Pizza in Flushing is very good. Also like Luigi's and Ruggero's.

How long has Gina's Pizza been around? I don't recall it from the 60s.

Surprising that the two John's aren't affiliated. The pizza at both seems to be the same (or at least was, at the one on Davison Road. It's been years).

Luigi's was a favorite of my east-side friends. In fact, there was a pre-event get-together there before the 45th reunion of my graduating class at Central. Gotta try that next time. I was always put off by the neighborhood, but I still love to go to Angelo's - go figure!

Ruggero's is another favorite. I can remember when they had a hole-in-the-wall place near Longfellow, where I went to junior high. The in-laws don't care for the new location, but said that the pizza is as good as ever.
