And I suppose the blame will all go to Detroit Public Schools and those entitled, incompetent, corrupt Detroiters dragging down the rest of the state, although I doubt it makes up even 10% of the state's total student population.

And it's interesting to note what every one of these states (expect MAYBE New Mexico) have in common too...

States With the Best (and Worst) Schools - 24/7 Wall St.

Quote:
9. Michigan
> State score: 63.8
> High school graduation rate: 70.9% (11th worst)
> Per pupil expenditure: $10,833 (23rd lowest)
> Preschool enrollment: 48.4% (20th highest)

Despite relatively good grades in standards and assessments, as well as in the transitions and alignment indicators, Michigan received a D in the K-12 achievement measure, among the worst in the country. Fourth graders in the state have not improved much in their math and reading abilities on national assessments. Fourth grade reading scores on national assessments actually got worse between 2003 and 2013. Between 2000 and 2010, graduation rates in Michigan also worsened by 2%, even as they improved across the nation by nearly 8% over that time.

Proof that paying teacher's more money is never the right answer.

Michigan has the second highest salary for teachers in the country.

I see it as proof that:

1. Charter schools are never the answer

2. Educational Reform has been an EPIC FAILURE

3. MONEY DOES MATTER--All the highest performing districts spend 2X-3X the state average per student.

Yep...

Snyder's EAA experiment is falling dead on its face for example. It saw a 1/4 drop in enrollment since the last school year.

The south for a long time was seen as backwards and with poor schools and racial issues. However, the next thing you know that is where most of the job creation moved to ....as company sought to take advantage of the low pay afforded to people with poor education, via right to work laws. Maybe that is Synder's Master Plan. Dumb down the state and attract companies looking to take advantage of an uneducated workforce.

As much as an "educated workforce" is touted, most of the jobs currently in the economy and an even greater percentage of jobs that are being "created" do not require a college degree. Remember, Synder's a self proclaimed nerd and I am sure he understands the implication of such data. Companies covet low wage workers.....which is why China boomed. However, highly educated people are not good candidates for low wage jobs.

Well to be fair, as the state has historically been centered around the Auto Industry, its workforce was never terribly educated. Snyder's just ensuring that these people remain uneducated with his actions.

Michigan's real problem was that it tried to govern with more "Progressive" policies when it was booming. With the economy now in the gutter, the wealth that was here before to fund those "Progressive" policies is gone. So basically, what we're experiencing in the wake of the Auto Industry's globalization and collapse is simply a slow but painful transition from a wealthy/progressive state to a poor/regressive state.

Really sad. Especially when you consider all of the great colleges and universities in the state.

You don't have to travel far to find one either.

Proof is in the pudding folks.

Truth is, we're a poor white trash southern state that just happens to be in the north.

If you want your kids to have any hope of an education, get the hell out of this state. It's beyond repair and will just get worse.

Scratch Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Muskegon Heights and their associated metro areas and you have a completely different picture.

Yeah, it's Snyder's fault lol.
