I keep hearing that the water in SV should not be used for drinking/cooking. Taking showers and brushing teeth, I can feel a distinct smell/aftertaste, but I have no idea what to attribute it to. Haven't been able to find anything online to substantiate these fears, but perhaps you can point me in the right direction?

Hmmmm....never heard of or have had issues with water in East Lansing. Do you know where it's coming from? Perhaps the physical plant offices can help you with your questions?

When I lived there, a looong time ago, there was a lot of iron in the water. It's different from water in the rest of East Lansing (which again is different from/inferior to/ the very good water in Lansing...never understood why the huge differences right next-door). Occasionally the old pipes would get shaken up for some reason, and there'd be a flood of rust into the water--it looked like someone had bled into it, and could stain clothing washed in it. I never heard that it was unsafe to drink, however.

teachbeach's suggestion to ask Facilities is good--if you don't trust them, Michigan's Drinking Water Analysis Laboratory is in your backyard; they'll test water for a fee, or perhaps if you call them they could reassure/warn you about your water if it's a known issue.
