That Engler gas tax increase did wonders for Michigan's roads !

The I-96/US 23 intersection is another fiasco. You exit one freeway by going into an uphill cloverleaf which dumps you into the left lane of the other freeway. Try that when you are pulling a 6000-lb trailer.
MDOT is updating the I-96/US 23 interchange and changing the existing lanes of I-96 to collector-distributor (CD) lanes. Construction is slated for late 2014.

I love this one. Getting off I696 and heading onto M5. You have to slow down to at least 35-40mph for the exit due to the sharp curve and the cars coming on are going at 60-70mph getting on. you're all sharing the same short lane as well.

A couple of pet peeves: ramps merging from the right to freeway fast lanes and right-turn-only lanes where you don't see the arrows until it's too late to move over.

That's what the double-wide dashed white lines are so good for. They give a clue that your lane is exiting well before you have to exit, when you still have time to change lanes safely. You can see a pic (borrowed from this City-Data thread) here:

Note that the multiple arrows aren't really necessary when the double-line convention is widely used and understood.

I haven't seen these in my area - at least they're not everywhere, but it is on the surface streets where I usually get trapped. I have never had this problem on the freeways.

They're not used in Michigan, so far as I know, but they SHOULD be--I don't imagine it's a lot more expensive than painting regular lines. They could just as easily be used on surface streets as highways--the double line would start after the last intersection before the lane becomes exit-only.

The back roads are LONG and straight. I think they were designed by the moonshine runners.

That's right - our freeways have hard-to-miss overhead signs announcing exit-only lanes. You generally have ample time to change lanes.
