So being the top state in America, it is not surprising there are a few place not to live.

I fled Saginaw as soon as I could. The bright side of being raised in the City of Saginaw is that everywhere else is great by comparison.

Escanaba, Lapeer, Greenville, and possibly Muskegon do not belong on this list. I would replace them with Detroit, Benton Harbor, Muskegon Heights, and Inkster.

Agreed, while those aren't the best small towns they don't deserve to be placed lower than those crime infested crapholes.

Exactly! Muskegon is really working on developing the water front and urban zoning laws with respect to downtown. I think Muskegon has potential. Escanaba is an older population. Lansing really needs to focus more on the Upper Peninsula. It seems as if the UP is left on its own.

What is really interesting is that they listed Beecher as a town. It isn't a town- it is simply a community. They don't have a government. Their addresses are either Flint or Mt. Morris. I was really laughing when I read this sentence from the article, "This is the kind of city mismanagement that will put your hometown on a list of Michigan’s worst cities." I was thinking, "Well, if you did your research, you would know that it isn't an actual city, so there isn't a government to mismanage it!" Buena Vista- also- not a city!

And, I will agree that Lapeer has no business being on this list. Escanaba, either.

The picture they use of Muskegon doesn't even look like that anymore. It's called the Century Block and it's been totally redeveloped. Muskegon has a lot of work to do but it hardly deserves this list. It has some of the best beaches in West Michigan. Its unemployment rate has dropped down to around 6% too. *end rant*

Beecher and Buena Vista are classified by the Census Bureau as "census designated places." That makes them unincorporated quasi-cities. If CDPs are included they both are deserving of the ranking.

I agree with Magellan. Muskegon has much upside potential. The beaches at Pere Marquette Park and Muskegon State Park are among the finest in Michigan. Tourists tend to overlook the Muskegon beaches in favor of more trendy beaches at St Joseph, Grand Haven, Traverse City, and Petoskey. Muskegon has its problems. I think much of its bad reputation is due to confusion between Muskegon and Muskegon Heights.

Wow! It has been several years since I have been to Muskegan. That is an incredible transformation of their downtown!
