What's the status on the law passed in 2011 that banned public employers from offering domestic partnership benefits? Is this still in effect or did this get overturned? A lot has happened since then but not sure if this is still on the books.

From Wikipedia:
On September 15, 2011, the Michigan House of Representatives, in a 64-44 vote, approved of a bill that would banned most public employers, though not colleges and universities, from offering health benefits to the domestic partners of their employees. It did not extend to workers whose benefits are established by the Michigan Civil Service Commission. On December 7, 2011, the Michigan State Senate, in a 27-9 vote, approved of the bill. On December 22, 2011, Governor Rick Snyder signed the bill into effect.[43]

Also, what are people's experiences with private employers? Is it common for their to be domestic partner benefits?

Thanks!

I do not thnk it is common except maybe in Ann Arbor. I cannot think of any company I know of that provides domestic partner benefits I am only guessing about Ann Arbor, but I would expect them to.

I believe Dan Gilbert's companies (Quicken Loans, Bedrock, Fathead, etc...) offer domestic partner benefits.

That law was overturned as unconstitutional by the courts.

At least the two major universities (MSU and UofM) offer the equivalent of domestic partner benefits, by calling them "Other Eligible Individual" or "Other Qualified Adult". There may be other enlightened employers in the state that also do so. Certainly the academic institutions are likely to.

Both Ann Arbor and East Lansing recognize domestic partnerships, and benefits are extended in the city of Kalamazoo, and in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. Domestic Partnership Rights by State | LegalMatch Law Library
