Good afternoon,

Looking to move to the UP (Toivola) in the next couple of months and thought I'd hit up anyone local to the area for tips on what are some good areas to look for employment, meeting folks and making friends, good places to eat and visit. I will be staying with a friend until I decide where I want to buy a home.

I'm also a Veteran and interested in any local organizations to get involved with.

I currently live outside of Palm Springs and have been wanting to leave for some time due to the political climate of this state and the desire for more freedom.

I know that winters can be brutal and I'm okay with that as I love colder climates and have lived in more than a few both in CONUS and abroad.

My interests are bushcrafting, camping, hiking, firearms related activities.

Thanks in advance!

There are no jobs and no people around there. It's a zero horse town, there's not even a traffic light.

The only thing around there is Houghton & Hancock - home of Michigan Tech University - 15 miles away. Houghton has almost 8000 people, Hancock almost 5000.
L'Anse is your second best bet. It's 40 miles away. Home of 2000 people. But it does have a Certainteed factory.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I work in Indian Gaming right now (Safety and Risk Management/ Gambling Compliance), looks like Ojibwa Casino Baraga is relatively close so I'll definitely check them out.

I seriously can't wait to leave California!

Sadly, I lost the "My governor is dumber than yours" contest over stupid lockdown rules to my friends in California. But we were in the lead for a while. New Jersey ultimately won. Still Michigan was a strong contender. Always at leas int he top 5 if not the top 3.

The high cost of living is one of the reasons I'm getting out of California, that and the restrictions on freedom that exist here.
I'm very much looking forward to the move as I'm an outdoorsy kind of guy and looking forward to the natural beauty of your state.

You might be surprised. Ann Arbor is more expensive to live in than Sacramento. Most of metro Detroit is equal.

Now rural UP housing will be a whole lot cheaper, but groceries and utilities are going to be more. Simply is much harder to deliver stuff up there.
