Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get to Saugatuck via public transportation from Chicago. Or know where I can get some info? Have heard that it's a nice place to check out...would you recommend going there over the upcoming long w/e? Thanks!

Default Saugatuck is great

Saugatuck is definitely a wonderful place for a long weekend or more.
In fact, just about anywhere along the West Coast of Michigan is worth the trip. Our beaches and beach towns are beautiful.
And, as a Chicago native, I can tell you that there is a big difference between the beaches in Chicago and the beaches in Michigan.

Amtrak's Pere Marquette (information is in link below) has daily service from Chicago to Grand Rapids.
Unfortunately, it doesn't stop in Saugatuck but it stops in Holland (my beautiful beach town) which is only 12 miles away.
If you know where you're going to stay in Saugatuck, I'm sure they'll help you arrange transportation from Holland.
Once you're in Saugatuck, you won't need a vehicle in order to have a wonderful time.

Come visit us in West Michigan! You're going to love it.

I don't have any recommendations as we've only been to Saugatuck on day trips.
Keep in mind, it's not an inexpensive place to vacation or, for that matter, live and crime is minimal. I wouldn't worry.
It really depends more on your budget and the accommodations run the gamut from B&Bs to European style hotels to The Best Western Plaza.
I suggest using Microsoft's Live Maps (link below) which, imo, has google beat in the map department. Then find hotels that interest you and plot them out on the map.

If you're not totally committed to going to Saugatuck, I'd like to suggest another place a little closer...New Buffalo, one of the Harbor Country towns.
It's quite a bit smaller then Saugatuck, busy, but not as busy, and it's an adorable beach town.

If you're just staying for a long weekend, there's more than enough to do. Besides, you need to spend some time just sitting on the beach.

We've stayed at the Harbor Grand a few times and it's one of my very favorite hotels.
The best thing for you though, the train stops right in town and if you use rolling bags, you can walk to the Harbor Grand.
