Like chocolate chips and Lay's potato chips perhaps, as in CHAW-ko-lay? Or is it Chuh-KO-lay, or maybe another way? Which syllable(s) is/are stressed? Did the name come from Native Americans or settlers?

I've driven through that town a few times and always spent a couple of minutes wondering about the name, but the two times that I stopped for a burger I forgot to ask by the time I'd made it up to the window.

And there's another one I've been wondering about - is Pinconning pronounced PIN-con-ning or is it PINE-con-ning? PIN-con-ning sounds odd to my ears, but I think I've heard it pronounced that way. And it couldn't be any weirder than Puyallup, which is pronounced Pyoo-AL-up, with the stress on the al.

Chocolay township is pronounced CHAW-ko-lay, like as in chocolate. I've no idea where the name comes from, but the Chocolay River is fairly large for UP standards.

So it does sound like chocolate. A mystery has been solved. And it is a beautiful river with a pretty, translucent brown color, so chocolate fits!

I'd always heard it as Chalk-lay...but maybe it was my bad hearing (I grew up about 20 miles west of Marquette).
