Looking to investigate this area for a possible move in retirement, and would appreciate feedback concerning the area. Going to be in the Tawas area in mid-May, working my way up the lake to Rogers City. Seems there are plenty of small to tiny towns along the lake/10-20 miles inland, and the entire area at least here 550 miles away looks beautiful... I love to fish/hunt/target shoot/star gaze and astronomy/photography, so this area seems ideal in many ways. Also have to think this area has a slower pace of life, and hopefully is quiet and peaceful.

Where I live now, I actually get a bit more snow than avg for the NE MI area and it's as cold or colder in the winter. So what can you tell me about the area... Good, bad, indifferent? Thanks for the help.

Rural medical care in Michigan can be pretty rough so keep that in mind if you plan to get pretty old there. I'd start by prioritizing being within 30 minutes of either the Midland-Bay City corridor or Alpena in the name of health services access.

Good call and I thought much the same. Alpena/Alpena area has been getting a lot of my attention because of this, and other factors, i.e. the town seemingly has a lot to offer considering its tiny population - Surprisingly so.

Alpena hospital does have extremely poor ratings, for what it's worth:

This is a common issue facing many smaller cities and rural areas.

Disappointing. I had spoken to a resident of the area asking about the care of that hospital and had gotten a similar answer in a roundabout way. Amazing how many ratings it seems for here and so many other hospitals are either one star or five... Rural hospitals closing/poor ratings are such a problem for folks like us who don't want 'city life'... What are you supposed to do?

I guess you find the small town that's within 20-30 minutes of a small or micro metro area that serves as a regional hub for shopping and medical services- Traverse City, maybe Marquette, Paducah, Kentucky (which had the nearest 'good' hospital when we lived in NW Tennessee), etc.

The best hospital in northern lower peninsula Michigan is in Petoskey.

My favorite town in that area is Oscota.
