I've been looking at Kalamazoo lately and I need to know what the summers are like. Are they hot and muggy like here in Tennessee or are they mild like Traverse City?

Both.

some days are hot and muggy, but no where near as many says as in Tennessee. Some days are comfortable. Tight now you will need a jacket in the wee hours of the morning, but during the day short sleeves are comfortable. However other years, or even other weeks this year it might be intolerably muggy and hot.

Do not worry about the weather. Portage (next to Kzoo) has a chick fila!

Is it like that in the whole state or just the southern part of the Lower Peninsula?

Pretty much all of Michigan has more tolerable summers than TN. You may experience a few weeks of hot and muggy but even then it's not as prolonged or oppressive.

I live in tennessee. I have also lived in Michigan in the past. No comparison to tennessee summers... Kalamazoo is definitely a lot more like traverse city than anywhere in tennessee. Cold winters, cool fall and spring and a mild pleasant summer. That sums up Michigan’s climate.
