Try any of the Metroparks or Maybury State park.

It is hard to beat Kensington Metropark. It is about 15-20 minutes from Novi. Take the I-96 West, get off at Milford Road North. Go north a little over a mile and turn into the park. It is a huge park (5700 acres if I remember correctly) large lake (1200 acres) petting farm, nature center, two beaches (one with a big slide), boat rental, golf course, and dozens of picnic areas with barbques.

Island Lake Rec center just across the freeway from Kensington is also pretty nice, but smaller and less developed.

Maybury just outside of Northville, is nice, but less devloped and does not have a lake. It used to be a T.B. sanitorium, but the buildings are all gone and it is mostly woods now. They have a farm there as well.

Northville, Milford and SOuth Lyon also have somall town parks where you can have a picnic as well.
