I lived in Michigan for 40+ years (born & raised), and my wife was born & raised in New Mexico (25 years for her).

Anyone else here been born & raised?

The Valley of the Sun has been good to us but....

...we've decided that we're not going to live here until we die.

It's a toss up:

Cloudcroft, New Mexico vs. Alpena, MI.

I love the sunrise side of Michigan just as much as the majesty of the higher elevations in New Mexico.

Opinions please.

Charlevoix is beautiful.

I saw Cheap Trick there in 1981.

Personally, I've been trying to get back to Michigan for a little over a year now. I was born in Bay City and moved to suburban Detroit in the early 60's. I'm tired of the dirt, dust, wind, heat, and general dislike for the climate of the southwest. I've been out here since 1985 and hated it. However, I must admit it did grow on me a bit for a while in the late 90's to about 2 years ago. But, I went back to Michigan for family business last year (I hadn't been to Michigan since '95) and the natural beauty and charm of Michigan hit me like a ton of bricks. The job climate scares me a bit, but I don't have a profession that is necessarily tied to the auto industry. My vote would be for Michigan but, then, I'm a little biased.

I wasn't impressed with Albuquerque either.

And Santa Fe is a 'lil bit too "new age" for our tastes.

Ifya go south to the really high country, you'll be amazed at the scenery.

Kinda like da U.P. as far as lifestyle goes, just bigger hills.

There's sumthin' about Thunder Bay that turns me on...

I was stationed at Holloman AFB from 1998-2003 (retired from AF there) and, to tell you the truth, I wasn't impressed with that area of the state either. Too hot (except up in the Ruidoso area) and too dry for me. Water quality was terrible. That area of the state reminded me of Tucson in as far as the depressive heat.

Been here 42 years, be here till I die. Once I die, I just want my ashes put in a bottle and tossed in Lake Superior, see what happens.

Alpena is GORGEOUS, and close to even more gorgeous areas. The weather is a lot more...interesting, shall we say...than you get in NM. I vote Alpena.
