Did any of you see this on the local news last night? Apparently, NASCAR's popularity and TV ratings have been dipping as of late, so a few people have discussed whether or not they should shorten the season a bit by eliminating some of their races, and if so, which races would be the ones to go. Check out this link to see what Felix Sabates, one of the team owners had to say about our wonderful state:

NASCAR Owner Says Dump MIS (http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/sports/nascar/nascar/nascar-owner-says-dump-mis - broken link)

There's "nobody left in Detroit other than the police and unemployed"????

"Why throw good money after bad?"????

What an arrogant jerk! Have any of you ever been to MIS for a NASCAR race, or visited the Irish Hills region in general? It is completely gorgeous there! Rolling green hills, sparkling lakes...and the NASCAR races at MIS bring in tons of money, millions of dollars. People pack the place and overflow the bleachers into the infield and campgrounds besides. Most of them spend the entire weekend there and are some of the most devoted racing fans in the country. MIS draws fans from as far away as Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Canada, not to mention the diehard fans who RV and follow the circuit all over the country and those who are wealthy and fly in.

I thought this was just a total slap in the face to Michigan and further evidence (sigh...!!) that uninformed people from elsewhere STILL think that Michigan=Detroit, period. End of discussion.

What a jerk! Hopefully, more informed people will fill him in and their opinions will prevail.

Don't take what Felix Sabates says seriously. I've been a NASCAR fan for 20 plus years and he always comes out with statements like this. I don't think NASCAR officials pay much attention to him anyways. He tends to criticize every race track, every car, every driver, every rule change, etc... I doubt they would take away the Michigan race for exactly the reasons you stated - it serves a huge area in the Midwest and it's an easy drive from other states. When I lived in New York, he constantly criticized the Watkins Glen track and surrounding area. This is one of the most beautiful areas in NY and the races were always sold out. Needless to say, there is still a race there and he still complains. Again, don't take him seriously - he likes to hear himself talk. People who have been to Michigan know how beautiful it is and he isn't likely to change their minds.

I have followed NASCAR for years. I want to make it to MIS someday because others I have talked to that have been there loved it. I think my favorite track has to be Talladega, Alabama then Bristol, Tennessee but there are several I haven't visited yet so that might change.

We are even. They are not much of a team.

Check this out:

"Sabates, along with partners Teresa Earnhardt and Chip Ganassi, will field the cars of drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray this season. Sabates spoke to a reporter from the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer for a story published on Monday."

Montoya? Are you kidding me? He's the little rat dog barking for attention. And this comes from his boss.

Ask me if I'm surprised.
