Most any city or town on a major body of water is appealing unless its a complete dump. This isnt just any body of water though...its Lake Superior.

Come to a town that size in Kentucky... You'll be praying to be back on I75 as soon as possible.

I've been to Kentucky and found the scenery nicer than a lot of areas of Michigan. Everyone here refers to Houghton Lake as Houghtontucky.

I am gonna go out on a limb here, seeing that you from a rather "uppity" area (Harper Woods) and say that you are merely a "city" person who has no love for small town America! It is NOT just a generic town! There is tons of mining history, and it is on the shores of our greatest lake! How can one NOT see the appeal?? Oh wait....no mall complexes, no places to get $200.00/plate dinners, etc.......................

The Preservation Trust has always been about our historical architecture , its restoration , and awareness in the community. Marquette is being honored for just that . One only has to take a short tour around town , the red sandstone buildings , the harbor , the remains of the Iron age boom that created so many magnificent structures of era opulence.

If you are not a student of Historical things , you may not see things in the same light as those of us that do....sad to say....keep voting , for Marquette ! www.Preservation.org/ddd (broken link)

Wow, you are the first person I have seen on this forum refer to Harper Woods as uppity. Thank you. It's mostly been inaccurately described as undesirable population and little Detroit.

For the past couple months I have been living in Gaylord and went to high school in Roscommon. I don't know where there are $200 dinners in Harper Woods. When I eat out, it's the White Castle in Eastpointe.

Actually Marquette DOES have a premier dinning experience or two...where you can drop 200.00 without much effort. Try The Chop House for example, great steaks ! Not Chicago , but you do have a view of Lake Superior, and its in one of those " historically significant" buildings we talk about. Two for one , I would say....
