I know that many young college graduates are leaving Michigan for better opportunities elsewhere, with Chicago being one of the top destinations. Its close, etc.

I'm curious, although Toronto is in a different country, is as much of "big city with the full range of opportunities" and it is a bit closer.

Do you know any young people that moved to Toronto because of a good job opportunities, young adult scene, etc?

hmmmmm I don't personally know of anyone , but I do have friends there . It can get expensive to live there and the traffic in the GTA (greater Toronto area ) is horrible !

I just read the other day that Canada's unemployment dropped to about 8.3%. It didn't break down the cities or provinces data, though.

Chicago is struggling, I think. Well over 10% unemployment.

Wouldn't it be harder nowadays for an American to work in Canada w/o special skills or sponsorship?

Didn't NAFTA make working in Canada easier with the TN visa? Or did we get screwed in the US again so that its only easy for Canadians and Mexicans to work in this country and not the other way around?

Hmm...I've never heard of this either.

I'd think it would be a bad idea. From what I know, there are an enormous amount of PhD and other immigrants from all around the world doing more customer service and taxi driving type work...usually trying to get into the U.S. to apply their real skills after they've been granted Canadian citizenship.

Hmm . . . is that because Canada, or at least the greater Toronto area has such a good education system???

Because if Chicago public schools are any indication, then its no wonder that so many young adults from Michigan, etc. as well as Chicagos own suburbs flock to the north lakefront areas. Maybe Chicago just can't produce the kind of brains themselves to take the "creative class" jobs.

From Michigan, how is Toronto closer than Chicago? Unless you're from the eastern U.P., that's not the case.

Also, I've only known two people to move to Toronto from Michigan (and one who did the reverse). I've known plenty to go from Michigan to Chicago. Of course, I'm from West Michigan. Also, I've heard it's almost impossible to get a Canadian work visa, of course, I could be wrong.

It IS tough getting a work visa in Canada...but not impossiable. Could be worth the try... Toronto is a great City...with a great future, much better than Chicago...these days.

For people on the eastern side of the state, Toronto is about 3 1/2 hours away.

But, I've never met a Michigander who 'emigrated' to Canada...i.e. Toronto.

For most Michiganders...there are jobs in the greater Metro area...and Chicago is the big 'cool' city for people who want urban.

The majority of Michiganders though, it seems they want to head SOUTH...i.e. FLORIDA...and to a lesser extent, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, or North Carolina.

Canada just isn't on the radar for most Michiganders.

The original point of my post however, is that Toronto is really everything that Chicago is (at least everything that is positive), and about similar distance from most young Michiganders who would be looking for that cool urban experience.

But like other stated, the fact thats in another country makes everything more complicated.
