What really bugs me is the CBO recommended that the TRICARE Standard max cost be raided from 3000 dollars a year to 7500 dollars a year. So the ultimate goal is to force retired military to pay for their own medical insurance rather than use any TRICARE Standard. Most bases won't see retired military or there is a pretty good waiting period.
When I went in in 1954 I was told if you stay at least 20 years you and your wife will have free lifetime medical care. This was repeated each time I reenlisted. What did I learn from this? Don't trust the lying politicians and DOD civillian upper levels. They can lie and don't care about retirees.

When you retired from the military did your ID card have a statement on it saying "No Civ med care after xxxx(where xxx was the day you turned 65). I may not be totally correct in the wording. And yes I got the same bull****, what they neglected to say was "on a space available condition for military treatment facilities".
Now that they are doing away with Tricare Prime for retirees, do you think the will do away with Tricare-for-life for us on Medicare? My problem is that it appears that my wife will lose her Prime coverage in April 2013 and will not turn 65 until Nov 2013. Guess we have a decision to make...get supplemental insurance for 7 months or take a chance nothing serious happens. Will probably play it safe and get a supplemental.

If you went in in 1954 you are on TriCare for Life and the only thing you pay is Medicare.
Medicare is about 10% of my military retirement. This is not free medical care for me and my wife. Any program that is in effect can be changed, at any time, by congress with a small inclusion in another piece of legislation. As for free lfetime medical care, a federal court ruled that the DoD did not have authority to offer this. This was after it had been a recruiting promise for years. If you will recall Tricare for Life came about after billboards, which I did contribute money to, were placed in several congressmen's districts during their reelection campaigns.
No. But I would guess it would probably get worse, before it gets better...
Military retirees and their dependents that live more than 40 miles from a military treatment facility or BRAC (base closure) site will lose access to TRICARE Prime as early as next April. This move could force as many as 171,000 retirees to shift to TRICARE Standard. The new TRICARE support contracts were originally drafted in 2007.

I thought TRICARE Standard only pertains to those living overseas and no monthly premiums are paid! I live in the Philippines and have TRICARE Standard and don't pay any monthly premiums until I turn 65 to start paying for Medicare Part B that I can't even use here, but TRICARE
will make up the cost.

OK! I see! No wonder, but it was easier to use TRICARE in California when we were on vacation and also my prescriptions were cheap with just the copay! Overseas, we have to pay upfront cash in or out patient for the full amount of the bill and file a claim for reimbursement after the fact!
Those located in the western region will adjust to United Healthcare for Military and Veterans on April 1st. Yes it's a cruel day and some will be more upset that Easter Monday will reveal they'll lose their PCM, specialist and cross their fingers UHC will add them to the network later on. Meanwhile all we have to do to see the previous doctors(s) is pay 115% of the old co-pay.
The sixteen year agreement with Tricare is history. Moderator cut: Please, we don't need your politcal comments
