What cost cutting DoD would you suggest? How about shutting down all the golf courses on all US military bases. Just the Andrews Airforce base alone is a small fortune in golfing expenses.
wow! I guess serving your country, being sent anywhere, anytime, being deployed away from family for months, and put in harms way doesn't qualify for our military to have a place to go and enjoy some recreation locally? If someone wants to go play at a munincipal coarse, they can, but these facilities on base are for active duty military, retirees and guest. It is an earned priviledge to have these places for morale and to relax for a change. Unless one served, it wouldnt be understood.
At every command, at every base, on every vessel, there is waste.
Currently officers are encouraged for their spending. The more they can spend, the better write-ups they get in their evaluations. "Officer X was in charge of a $1Million budget"
We could save so much more if there were programs to encourage thrifty spending and they got rid of the "use it or lose it" policy they have now and gave us the ability to buy things at the cheapest price. So much waste because there is no incentive to save and everything costs the government more.
I needed 12 flip charts and easels for my training teams to deploy with. I found them at Office Depot for $125 each. Unfortunately I couldn't get them at Office Depot and my supply department made me order THE EXACT SAME THING (same brand and model number) from the GSA catalog at $895 each. What we could have done for $1500 cost the government nearly $11,000.
It's like that with every part and piece of equipment the DoD uses.
Quit with the constant uniform changes, and bring one common combat uniform for all of the services (took an act of congress for that one). And stop with every service head trying to leave their mark with a new uniform.
Continue to close bases, but do away with those joint command things.
Allow the military to establish what its needs are based on the mission of the gov; not a bunch of civilians trying to protect jobs in their district.

Here at Redstone Arsenal, our golf course is the only true money-maker that MWR has. If it wasn't for it, everything else would go away too.
But where would the officers and Chiefs go for their weekly Fri afternoon game? I mean really. That's crazy talk right there.
Chiefs are supposed to golf? I'll have to tell my fiance to rush out and get some clubs. I don't think it's happening, though...apparently, we are committed to not supporting MWR by not being golfers.
