My husband recently became an active duty Airman. We are in our late twenties, married for a few years. We both have always lived in cities. We live in the NYC area for years now, only 10 minutes train ride to Manhattan where I work in IT. That said, we have never been party goers or anything of the sort. The most we liked in NY are dog parks, walking around the pretty parks and eating out (a lot).
We found out yesterday that our very first PCS is Goldsboro (Shady J?). Thank you for any insight posted in this thread!
1. Can you recommend areas worth looking into, as we are planning living out of base? We do not have kids, only a dog. We would like to rent a house but seeing the BAH he'll be getting, we are considering renting an apartment instead. A 20-30 minute drive is what we are looking for.
2. I am in IT, and would like to continue working in the same field. Are there neighborhoods near both the base and cities where I can look for a job? I am in Web Development, so working remotely but showing up in the office a few times every month is widely acceptable.
3. I read that your political stance is a factor to where you want to live in Shady J. Is this true? Do excuse me if I sound naive but this was never a factor in choosing where to live. If it does, then I guess it is worth mentioning that we don't have any strong political stance.
I'm sorry, I've never heard of that base despite being in the AF for a decade and a half. Must be a small base. The only ones in NC that I can even think of are Pope and Seymore Johnson.
Seymour Johnson AFB is actually in Goldsboro, NC... About an hour and half from Fort Bragg (U.S. Army)...
She has also posted in the North Carolina forum, so all is well.
