The battle for Saipan ended 75 years ago this month. This was some of the most brutal fighting in the Pacific.
Interestingly enough, when you click the link above, one of the two guys shown in the first
picture is my great-uncle. He showed this picture to his family some years later and identified himself. He came through the battle for Saipan but was injured in Tinian and sent home. Beyond that, like many, many WWII vets, he didn't talk much about the war and his service. He passed in 1998. RIP WO.
