I had posted earlier about a hazing incident involving my nephew, Pfc. Phillip W. Whitehead Jr. In the end it didn't matter. He passed away this weekend. I just want to pass along to everyone the need to utilize the risk management and attention to detail that we all learned while in the military. We are taught from day one the importance of the little details, so that when we are in life and death situations the small stuff is already ingrained into us. My nephew made the terrible mistake of not checking his gear, believing that since he had used it earlier that it must have been good to go. It turned out to be a fatal mistake. His family is broken, the Army lost a very talented soldier, and hopefully we can all learn a lesson about complacency, and how fatal it can be.

RIP soldier, your watch has ended. Until we meet again.

For any retired military living near Fort Campbell, there will be a service there on Thursday, July 25th. The time hasn't been set yet. Any active duty/retired are invited to pay their respects if they so wish. This service is being handled by the 101st Airborne Division.

Thanks to you all for your condolences.

My heart breaks for you and all his loved ones. I'll read the story but if hazing was involved...
I see now it was an off-duty accident. Very tragic. Check and double check...

I am sorry for your loss. I am a little confused though since I thought you stated that the incident happened at Ft. Polk and involved gallons of water? The article you linked happened in Alabama and involved rappelling. Did you accidentally link the wrong article?

In any case I am indeed sorry for the loss of your nephew; I hope that you and your family will be able to find peace.
