While I greatly respect such flag ranks, seems often enough, it is 10% actual operations, and 90% political BS they do, and I have no interest in that 90%.
If I had 20 something years in and had commanded a brigade, wing or ship, who knows? For many that high command without the politics of flag rank was the goal of the military career. Most of those that I went through ROTC with were on the 6 years and probably out of the service career path.

Well, to even get into the position to even be considered as a flag officer - a lot of things have to break right - in terms of billets, assignments. The officer has to be politically savvy as well to get there, and stay there.
I know and worked with lots of FOGO's (Flag Officers (Admirals) and General Officers), politics is a big part of the job unfortunately.
