Everyone who serves is fulfilling a vital role.

Everyone who volunteers to work in a role that pays 'combat' or 'hazardous duty' pay, is worthy of respect.

Shot off the flight deck of the carrier 100 times.

But I was never shot at! I'll take it.

Was that with or without an airplane?

I think you are confusing "LIFER" with "REMF".

Army 13 Foxtrot, Forward Observer. I supported Mechanized and Straight Leg Infantry as well as Tankers and an occasional Radar unit.

That is the mark of a POG

You might want to rethink those words after you read about the duties and responsibilities of Army Combat Engineers. My experiences are more plentiful than the sands in a 24 hour glass.

I did earn and give respect for the efforts in peace time and deployed conflicts to "eleven bullet stoppers" and tread heads (tankers). The light fighters from 10th Mountain Division and 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team impressed me the most.

When I searched the internet for "pogue" meaning or "pogue definition," some search results may have directed me to the military term "POG" or its Gaelic translation, which is "a kiss." I thought it was because they have the same pronunciation; however, POG actually originates from the Gaelic word "pogue."

I never noticed this distinction in the sea services between those assigned to combatant ships versus those assigned to supply/auxiliary vessels.

The class distinction, if you will, is between the surface navy and the submarine community. Each giving the other branch some friendly ribbing.

About a week ago, a friend approached me to 'counsel' me. It seems that I said an off-color joke in the presence of his girlfriend. She wanted him to talk to me about it. In the process of doing so, he said that I am not a 'real' servicemember anyway so I should not talk like a servicemember. Now keep in mind this man is a disgruntled vet. So his demeanor is one that he carries a big chip on his shoulder.

My only thought is to compare how many years I have spent earning 'combat pay' and that I still carry an ID card, I get a paycheck every month, and I am subject to recall should Congress declare war.

I assume that he meant to say that I was a POG. Projecting that 11Bs are somehow the 'real' military.
