And no. New Mexico is not, nor has it ever been, a foreign assignment.
My grandson-in-law just finished 5 years at Cannon. He might disagree.
Mr. Dokie is a VN vet, Infantry, CIB, Purple Heart, what they call down at the VA “The Real Deal.” He would take great exception to someone who served stateside calling themselves a Vietnam Vet. They may have served honorably and could have been sent there in a heartbeat, but they are NOT Vietnam Vets.
I disagree and as I am Vietnam Era Vet, I get the right to do so.
If you were in Thailand launching and recovering B-52s from Utapao during Operation Linebacker II, would they be considered Vietnam Vets? Or must you have BOG in Vietnam?
If you were in England launching and recovering B-52s to drop ordinance in Kuwait during the First Gulf War, would they be considered Gulf War vets? Or must you have been in theater? Also, don’t forget that the first sortie of the Gulf War I was launched from Barksdale, dropped ordinance, and then recovered back at Barksdale, a non stop mission.
Lastly, if you were back in CONUS and prepping jets that were getting ready to enter the battle space, would they be considered war vets?
Because without all of those thousands of people, those jets are nothing but static displays.

So then during WW2 all those people in the factories making bombs and planes and tanks are also war veterans??? I think not. If the military recognizes where you served was a combat zone[combat pay?} Then you are a “combat” veteran.

Many parts of New Mexico are beautiful but unfortunately the State is very poor and they seem to enjoy the poverty.
I hope you read the 1st sentence of my post? Mr. Dokie and I are in total agreement. Please thank him for me for his service.
I am not, never have been and until 2019, I thought I would never be a Vietnam veteran. But I got this from the state of Georgia, that says I am now a Vietnam veteran.

I joined in 1976 and in applications for federal government job I am considered a 5 point Vietnam vet but I never claim that status. Bad enough I had my Iraq war to remember on. Not that I think my time was worse than theirs. I know that I had it fairly light there. I did know a few kids from my school that got the call and at least one didn't make it back. To me though they are heroes and got me motivated enough to get off the street and do something with my life. If any of you reading this are Vietnam veterans, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Vietnam vet. Someone assigned within a combat zone and surrounding waters.
Vietnam era vet. Someone not assigned within a combat zone and surrounding waters but served during the Vietnam war.
I was assigned to The Directorate of Planning and Training at Fort Lewis 1970-72. I am a Vietnam era vet.
My brother-in-law was assigned to an aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam. He is a Vietnam Vet.
He was an ordnance specialist.
Visited Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it is just that a memorial to those that died. Nothing else, not political. Any that attempt to attach political meaning ... just not right.
In regards to benefits, vets and era vets are about the same, but vets that served on the ground can get some consideration for agent orange problems.
