My husband is getting out of the army in January, and has about two months of paid vacation time. We really won't have the time/need to use it, so does anyone know if we will get paid for it at all?
Accrued Leave That Was Not Used
If you reenlistment, voluntarily retire, separate, or are discharged and have accrued leave by law, you have the opportunity to sell back your accrued leave (up to 60 days). Even though the Armed Forces are mandated to uphold this policy the purpose of leave is to take a break from the pressures of duty. It is not intended to be used as a method of compensation. Your leave will be valued at your basic pay rate. One day of leave = one day of pay.
Here the deal. Take the leave and not the money why you ask, because cashing out you will be taxed and in most cases, he can find a job, well try anyway work and be on terminal leave. If you cash out you will only get base pay, but if you take terminal leave the amount he has earned you will get all your entitlements, active duty pay and yes BAH!!!! Look at this carefully. I took terminal leave and made more money than having to get taxes taken out and not having to pay taxes on the cashing out.
He can't use his time to get out early, he's already getting out early to go to school, and we have to sell our house before we can move and get jobs. So even with taxes, we'll take the money.

You don't use it to really get out early. He can get out the same day you plan to, but get his paycheck for 60 more days with all entitlements that he qualifies for, instead of just his basic pay.
Okay, I must not have understood before. So you're saying we'll be given the option to have one lump sum given to us, or to continue to be paid for two months? That would be pretty amazing since like I said, we're moving for him to go to school and we don't know how soon we'll be able to get jobs.
I retired from CG with so much leave saved up I didn't know what to do with it. I sold 2 months back (max allowed), and lost the rest. Base pay only. No allowances, subsistance, dependents, sea-pay, hazardous, flight... It was about 1/2 of what my paycheck was. I had a job lined up, so there was no need to search (I retired in 1996). Things are different now, but you'll be paid what you're owed, not for services and activities you will no longer use. Thanks for your service (both of you) and best of luck!

Yes, but the lump sum would not nearly be the same amount as taking the 2 months leave. He would be in school for 2 months getting his military pay. You will also be able to use the comissary/exchange/PX for those 2 months, that won't make a difference if he is retiring after 20 since you get it anyway.
Unsure about the army, but in the air force I can take over a month to receive money for selling leave...
