United States ahve had had several wars going back to 1776. Those were mentioned b/c those are the wars where people are still alive. The obvious war missing is the gulf war. In addition the military has been deployed for numerous interventions, evacuations, and displays of force between WWII and today in which servicemen have fought and some have died.
Are these the official wars and the only real wars?
The US has only had official declarations of war against a few countries in its history. Off the top of my head I think its Britain in the War of 1812, Mexico in the Mexican War, Spain in the Spanish-American War, Germany and maybe Austria Hungary in WWI (I'm fairly certain we never declared war on the Ottoman Empire or the smaller country that joined the Central Powers after the war started can't remember if it was Hungary or Romania), and Germany, Japan, and Italy in WWII. The ones they mentioned in the NASCAR race are the military conflicts with surviving US veterans.
The current wars are Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)
Really these are two different campaigns in the same war (not getting into the politics whether or not they should be). Just as you had Americans fighting in Europe and Asia during WWII, it wasn't the european war and japanese war. Which is why initially, you used to get the same medal for both the conflicts. The GWOT expeditionary medal.

Many race fans were stunned to learn Desert Storm wasn't listed....that it went from Vietnam to "2001 thru present"....alot of veterans were scratching their heads thinking...did they just forget? Or did I really not serve in a 'war'?
So I appreciate your responses....keep 'em coming!
So anyone serving in the military from mid 1970s thru 2000 did NOT get recognized and NASCAR did not consider from '90 (Desert Shield) and the first Gulf War (Desert Sorm) a war.
Are they right? Was just an operation and not a real war?

What about Grenada or Panama or the peace keepers deployed to Lebanon, or Somalia, or the bombardment of Serbia? They may not have been "declared" wars, but soldiers still died.
Do they not "count?"
