I'm considering relocating my family to the Milwaukee area and really need some advice as to where we should start looking in our search for a place to live.

1. Safe
2. Younger familes, professionals, lots of kids
3. Somewhat upscale but not exclusive if that makes sense
4. Good schools, we have two young children
5. Within commuting distance to Waukesha
6. Walkable is a bonus
7. No sidewalk-less surburbs, bonus for pre-WWII houses but i'm not stuck on that, the nearest store shouldn't be in a strip mall I have to drive to
8. Good restaurants are a plus

If anyone is familiar with SW Minneapolis that I would say that is near my ideal neighborhood.

Areas of the north shore look nice but appear to be far from Waukesha. What else should I look at? Maybe there are some towns out west that have some character left from before turning into Milwaukee suburbs?

Thanks a lot!

Wauwatosa I think is your best bet. Use google street view and you will see. I will post some here for you as well.

Thanks, Wauwatosa looks nice. Is there a big difference between the east and west?

How about some of the older small towns out west that have(?) commercial centers? Oconomowoc, delafied, etc. I've never been so maybe these are a completely different feel. Of course they have less access to the city itself but I figured its worth a look.
