Eshea, maybe you live in one of those better pockets of Riverwest. I just received an email from Next Door Riverwest that says there has been an increase in robberies, around the reservoir & also Commerce St. Personally, I'm getting sick of the crime here & I really wish they would step up the bicycle cops.

I live on Holton and I agree there are areas safer than others. I belong to Next Door as well, and got the email. Crime is up everywhere, not just Riverwest. Unfortunately, it is typical for this time of year, and am 100% in agreement that more bike cops would make a HUGE, positive, difference.

I think it's important for people who think they want to live in RW, or anywhere in the city, to check for themselves the true crime statistics - not personal opinion.

As I said in my previous post, and trying to stay on topic, it is an easy weekend or day trip to drive around and see what areas look like a fit for you. I would also suggest driving around at different times of day, and night, to get a better picture of the area you are interested in. That would be my suggestion to anyone.

I think it's of vital importance for anyone moving into Milwaukee for the first time to be aware of how dangerous Riverwest is compared to many other comparable neighborhoods, instead of neighborhood booster spiel pretending that it's all craft beer, fixies and rainbows. I know so many people who moved there during college from smaller cities - like lambs to slaughter. Shootings, abductions, stolen cars, break-ins, you name it. If you're from the city, then you already know what to expect; if you're from a similar gritty metro neighborhood, you can handle it no problem. Again, it's a cool neighborhood, but it has a lot of problems with crime. This is why I didn't move there in the first place, even though I'm there fairly often. I don't want to have to worry about getting jumped just because I'm walking by myself after the sun goes down because I needed a loaf of bread.
