Rumor has it that Johnson Controls wants to build a 50-story building on the corner of Clybourn and Lincoln Memorial.

I'll take the wait and see approach since every proposal comes in tall and ends up being scaled down. 50 Stories, great but what will the height be of the building? for example the US Bank building 601ft @42 stories when the US Bank building is technically the height of a at most 60 story building. We know this if it is a 50 story building then it is at least 500 ft.

It would be nice to crown a new tallest in the state building. I like the US Bank building but architecturally it's boring and bland. Then maybe if they do build it we could get an observation deck open to the public as well since the US Bank one is closed.

You mean there is a defunct observation deck up there? Is it a part of Doors Open MKE by any chance? I would love to check it out.

Hmmm, a good friend is a JC exec, I'll have to probe a bit on this...more tall buildings filling up space along the Lake is almost always going to be a good thing. Seems like some of this is tied to whether the streetcar project is launched downtown.

Considering businesses have floors usually around 14ft-15 ft and the JC HQ is going to be 50+ stories we're potentially looking at a building taller than 700 ft!!! Think of the changes Milwaukee is going through; NML, Couture, 700 E. Kilbourn, 833 East, and potentially the Westin Hotel. All of these buildings will attract more workers to downtown and with more workers come more people, with more people come businesses, and with businesses and people come a lively downtown. Not to mention a new bucks arena and a streetcar is in the works. Be excited change is in the air and we aren't that old rust belt city anymore.

The dimensions that JC is discussing are interesting...
They want 1.2 million sq ft and have it be 50 stories.
US Bank is 42 stories with 1.1 million sq ft and NWL will be even shorter with 1.08 million sq ft.

So I expect to see a very slim tower... Or something with a pretty significant tapering effect as it rises.

Seems like this project is going to take quite a bit of time since it's desired spot is where the freeway ramp relocation area is.

Yes, it is. I got the chance to check it out at Doors Open last year and the view was fantastic. It's too bad it's not open to the public any other time, though.

Here's an idea then...

If the tower is going to require a portion of public financing to be built, have it include the city's highest observation deck.
Charge $10 per person to check it out... $5 goes to Johnson Controls, $5 goes to the city.

A creative idea, but how many people would honestly pay $10 to visit an observation deck? I don't think I would.
