It's just overall nicer IMO and pretty much all high roller professionals and professional athletes reside there (River hills, Mequon, Bayside, Fox Point, Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Glendale, and lower eastside Milwaukee by UWM). You can't go wrong either way but the North Shore for me is much better. It is very upscale but I'd prefer it because I don't like the whole retail atmosphere with heavy traffic Brookfield carries.

Mequon is not part of North Shore, it's in different county. I'd argue that North Shore is limited to Whitefish Bay. The reason why is bus transportation, walk-ability and sheer density of population.

Fox Point/Bay Side/River Hills are suburbia, whereas Shorewood and Whitefish Bay are still parts of the city.

I disagree with you. Mequon may be in another county but it is apart of the North Shore. When people think of the North shore; Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Glendale, Fox Point, Bayside, River Hills, Mequon and Brown Deer come to mind. Being in a different county doesn't mean anything. That's like saying Mequon isn't apart of the metro area because it's in a different county. Mequon, Brookfield etc. doesn't exist without Milwaukee. It's all Milwaukee in my view.

Mequon isn't part of the traditional North Shore streetcar route (from the 1930s, for example), but at least SE Mequon has become an extension of the North Shore these days, primarily due to affinities in urbanization and demographics with more traditional North Shore communities.

The real estate business has pretty much roped all of Mequon into the North Shore label, even though many parts of Mequon are suburban subdivisions (or, in the case of Thiensville, a stand-alone village with its own history) that are not really connected to the urbanized north-south corridors of the North Shore. The "North Shore" label has become synonymous with prestige, wealth, leafy streets, and a suburbanized yet metropolitan lifestyle. It's a convenient way to sell neighborhoods.

Similar things have happened with Bay View. The traditional heart of Bay View is a very limited area of several city blocks near the lake. Nowadays "Bay View" includes all sorts of neighborhoods, including Fernwood, parts of the Garden District, parts of Tippecanoe....
