That's why they are wonderful ) Finding cheap rent in a good house at a good location takes a lot of time and luck. And the term "cheap" here is relative.

When I moved to Milwaukee, I rented a small place first in West Allis and looked for a better place from there.

On the plus side, the area has more older homes in decent neighborhoods for those of us who like that sort of thing. Down side is the taxes are 2-4 times as high with not much to show for it.
There are a decent number of older homes that do seem semi-affordable (based on my recent searches). Reminds me a bit of when we lived near chicago (though the chicago burbs seemed to have a decent amount of new construction happening). Could just be that late fall/winter is a down time for the market... idk?

It could also be the fact that Indy might have more mass-production cookie cutter builders with national names than Milwaukee currently, (KB Home, Pulte, Toll Brothers, DR Horton, etc.).

This is quite true. DR Horton is all over the place in Indy. I know because I bought and sold one of their homes in the last year (the same house.) That's been the case for some time, too, since the boom/bust of the last decade, too.

I believe the term we often used was "vinyl village".

Have you considered living in Kenosha? It’s cheaper, smaller and only 35 minutes to Milwaukee. I grew up there and raised my kids there.

I've heard about Kenosha. I had an old coworker who lived there. Don't know much about the area but it seems nice.

Teacher Terry, can you confirm or deny: Is there a little Little Italy section of Kenosha? Or WAS there??

Maybe near Tenutas?

In Milwaukee, our closest Little Italy is Brady Street or also in BayView.

Otherwise, I have to go to the next closest one: Highwood, in Illinois.

Master Jay, I wasn't aware of Highwood until I read this, so I just looked it up on the Google and found a couple of Italian markets. Very nice! That will be a road trip someday soon.

Empidonax, Allow me to be your tour guide once you're in Highwood!

Fantastic Old School Italian restaurants. I will introduce you to all my people there!

A glass of wine, on Master Jay!

Master Jay yes there was one but don’t know now. Kenosha also had many good family Italian restaurants. Real estate is also reasonable.
