Are there any areas within about a 45 min - 1 hour 15 min commute from downtown Milwaukee where one can find a home on about a one acre lot and good schools - specifically middle and high school? Pros and cons of these areas? Thanks in advance!

Port Washington, Saukville, Fredonia, etc., etc. Get on I-43 north and drive!

I lived in Port Washington for a number of years and it is a wonderful place. There's lots of land around it that's being developed, so I'm sure you could find what you're looking for around there. If you go farther south to Cedarburg prices go up significantly and lots are typically smaller.

Port schools are great as are most suburban schools, relatively speaking.

Port Washington is actually a former commercial fishing village from many years ago, and bears some resemblance to a New England fishing village. Loads of parks (not unique to Port) and open spaces, a great waterfront and wonderful downtown that's easily walkable with loads of shops (Bernie's Fine Meats!!!!) and restaurants.

The only con I can think of is if you bought land in the unincorporated county (Ozaukee) which would mean you probably wouldn't have snow removal unless you lived on a County road.

Good luck!

RM

I second anything in Ozaukee County, although prices are sky high and inventory is super low.

Other areas with potential options could be the Hartford/West Bend markets. Noting that one should always consider “worst case” transit time when they look at homes in a best case scenario. Being 45 minutes away on a clear sunny day with no road incidents can near double when its road construction season or when snow flies.
If the Milwaukee region’s home market is anything like what is in the Madison area, finding something available can be very difficult for potential buyers. Especially for anyone also trying to relocate where they need a place at once, while wanting more specific in land size, etc…...
If this is for a relocation, a visit to the area should almost be a requirement as well as hooking up with a good realtor who has experience not only in communities being considered but helping with aspects of relocation.
