Milwaukee has the second largest Hispanic/Latino population in the Midwest after Chicago.

Chicago proper is about 28% Hispanic/Latino, and with a population of 2.7 million, that amounts to about 700,000.

Milwaukee with a population of about 560,000, is about 20% Hispanic/Latino is about 110,000.

This is much larger in terms of total population than the other major Midwest metro areas which number less than 50,000.

What attracted a comparatively larger Hispanic/Latino community to Milwaukee compared to other metro areas in the Midwest? Does proximity to Chicago have anything to do with it, or is it completely independent of Milwaukee's big brother to the south?

I have friends who are Hispanic and have lived in the area for some time. Based on what I know about them, their families and community, it would appear that there has been a significant Hispanic community in Milwaukee for many, many years. Not surprising considering the number of other ethnic groups that have been in Milwaukee for over 100 years, if not more.

My great grandparents were one of the first established Mexican families in Milwaukee. A picture of their children is in the book, which I believe is called, "Mexicans in Milwaukee."
