I was wondering has anyone ever seen a coyote in the Mayfair area/ 122nd Locust. Has anyone else ever seen one in that area? Are they dangerous? Should the humane society be contacted?

Are you sure it wasn't a fox? I have seen foxes in that area.

If it *was* a coyote, I probably wouldn't worry too much (or at least do anything about it) unless I saw it again.

Oh yeah, you can find coyotes there. Don't worry, they're harmless. Just don't leave any small pets lying around outside by themselves.

They are extremely likely to be in that area. The humane society does not need to be contacted. I doubt that animal control would take any action unless it was causing immediate danger to people anyway. Most people never see them, so they think that coyotes are a rarity, or are dangerous, or "don't belong in a city".

Coyotes live up and down most of the Menominee River. They also live in parks and other park-like spaces throughout the area. I believe they live in every state in the lower 48. They are quite common in the greener suburbs, and are not unknown to different areas of the city as well.

They are not dangerous, unless you are a small animal. Meaning, don't leave small dogs outside unattended, even in a a fenced yard. They try to stay away from people, but once in a while you'll see them. I used to see them in Fox Point frequently when I lived there in the 90s. I know that there are at several that live in the Valhalla neighborhood of the Northwest side, and probably immediately around Timmerman Airport. These areas are isolated areas, a mile or two from the river, but Coyotes can wander great distances and set up shop anywhere that affords them some hiding space and an ample food supply.

Thanks for all of your responses I thought I was seeing things at first because it walked through someone's yard. It was about 5:00AM it was still very dark. The are some sly creatures, they really can sneak around undetected.

I'm sure you saw a coyote. There are coyotes in Brookfield for sure. They like the parkways and wooded parks. Don't leave small animals outside at night unattended, especially if you have a cat. I don't think they bother people. I only think they could do harm if they are in packs. Also, don't leave garbage around or they'll keep coming back.

My daughter lives in Mequon on a country club golf course, and there are a number of coyotes in that area. You can frequently hear them howling (or yipping, whatever it is they do) at night. She has seen them on several occasions - at night and in the daylight. I would be pretty confident that they're on the Wauwatosa area, as they're prevalent in the suburbs.
My other daughter lives in Appleton, and we've seen coyotes run through her back yard. They're probably everywhere in the state.

Yep I saw a rather large cayote in Brookfield right in front of Fiserv sniffing around the flag poles. Saw it with my own eyes. This was in 07 but I'm sure not much has changed there. The thing wanted nothing to do with me and headed off in another direction when I tried to get a closer look.
